An interesting survey from Career Builder found that 1 in 4 new managers say they are unprepared to do their job. 58% said they have received no management training. We also know that over 90% receive no ongoing management coaching.
The biggest challenges for these managers?
- Dealing with issues between co-workers
- Motivating team members
- Performance reviews
- Finding resources needed to support the team
- Creating career paths for my team
A few interesting notes… The two main responsibilities of a manager that if done well would eliminate the above listed challenges are matching talents to task and coaching. When teams don’t perform, when they don’t hit production goals, when they can’t consistently perform above standard on a phone shop, when there’s always an excuse… you’re not dealing with an employee issue but instead you’re facing a management issue.
The best organizations focus on their managers. They make sure their managers are trained and coached. They make sure their managers are managers and their managers are managing. Look at the core scores, i.e., phone shops, net checking, deposit growth, survey scores, etc. and you’ll see how the organization is managed.
