Are you using what you have in the most effective way? Whether it’s your team, your time or your resources or your equipment, be sure to utilize all that you have in a way that will get the most value and productivity. This seems like simple advice that everyone should be following . However, reality shows that far too many managers and leaders are doing the opposite. Just like this commercial, you can use an iPad as a cutting board. But how often, when managing your team, are you using an employee just like this man is using the iPad? Matching talents to task is one of the most basic keys to management. How often are you allowing yourself to operate outside of your talents? We find it amazing how often managers are using an iPad as a cutting board while wondering why they just can’t get things implemented or surpass expectations.
You can’t train an iPad to be a cutting board. You can’t give it extra stuff like a protective case or scratch guard cover make it perform better or last longer as a cutting board. And you can’t motivate it to perform more effectively as a cutting board (even if it has Siri!). Author, Jim Collins, said it well when speaking of people on your team or company, or as he states it, on your bus… “Start by getting the right people on the bus, the wrong people off the bus, and the right people in the right seats.”
The video is funny, but managing this way is not.
