Have you ever had the sense or feeling that someone is watching you? Maybe you’re having a “bad hair day” and you feel like all eyes are on you. Or maybe you’re the one doing the watching, when you’re at Wal-Mart, seeing how many strange and/or poorly dressed people you can spot. There are always times when we feel like someone may be watching. But rest assured, people are watching you all the time… even when you think no one is and this is especially true at work.
If you’re a manager or leader in your organization it’s very important to understand that your employees are watching your every move. Are you practicing what you preach? Are you abiding by the non-negotiables? Many managers and leaders wonder why they aren’t reaching the goals they have set. Most don’t realize the reason is that they are being watched and their actions are demotivating all those around them. It could be as simple as arriving at a meeting just a minute late. It could be having fewer cross-sells than anyone else (or no cross-sells). It could be the employees seeing their manager conveniently on the phone during the busiest times in the branch.
If you’re not a manager you’re still probably a leader to at least one person around you or at least you should be. How did you react to that meeting this morning? How are you implementing what your manager asked the branch to do? Are you even smiling or in a good mood? Your coworkers are watching you and you do affect others around you whether you think you do or not.
Make it a resolution this year to go about your business and day to day activities as if all eyes were on you. Set the example to follow and by doing so lead the way to success on your team.
By the way, don’t be too paranoid but odds are, someone is watching you as you have been reading this blog. Hopefully you shouldn’t have been doing something else instead.
