If you travel on I-10 about 20 minutes from where I live, you’ll see a site that I and many others see on a weekly or daily basis… an unfinished water park. It seems like some work might still be going on but it’s hard to tell. The water park began construction about 5 years ago. It could be longer, but it has to be at least 5 years. I hear rumors as to why it’s taking so long to build or if they quit building or if it’s ever going to be finished. Not sure if any of the rumors are true. Regardless, the point is, there’s an unfinished water park that at least 40,000 cars drive by every day to see. I thought about this unfinished park when someone brought up the question recently… “What have you not finished?”.
That’s my question for you (and me too) this week. What have you not finished? Are you seeing things through? Do you start projects and stop before they ever really get started? Maybe you do a project half-way. In other words, it’s good enough in your mind to say it’s done, but in reality it’s not done in a remarkable or even a good way. Some people are known for not getting things done. They talk about all the things they are going to do and they have a million excuses as to why they didn’t do. If you’re not finishing projects or seeing things through, there’s a good chance you are working in an area that is out of your talent set, or you could just be lazy.
Try this today… Think back to the beginning of the year and write down what you planned on doing or committed to doing. How many unfinished water parks are on your list? How many people are going by each day to witness your monument of unfinished work and broken commitments? Keep in mind, people believe more of what they see you do than what they hear you say you are going to do. Everyone loves a water park, but no one likes an unfinished eyesore on the side of the interstate.
