We came across a rather disturbing story the other day about yoga pants actually becoming part of dress attire in business. Not just ordinary yoga pants, but “dress” yoga pants. Kind of like “dress” jeans. Do they really exist? Here’s the point, as ridiculous as it would be for someone to wear “dress” yoga pants to work in a bank, many employees are constantly pushing the bar lower and lower on what is acceptable and many managers and banks are allowing it. If you’re serious about your career, start by dressing up to the standard of your boss. Hopefully your boss is doing the same. Keep in mind that you are helping people with one of the most important things in their lives… their money and financial future. Respect yourself, respect your customers and dress in a way that doesn’t press the boundaries of the dress code. The last thing anyone needs to see five years from now are bankers in yoga pants and pajama pants. Don’t laugh, five years ago casual Fridays were just on Fridays. Today, every day is casual at many banks. It’s time to get off the slippery slope to yoga pants.
